Midge Wetzel and I grew up in differing Christian religions as kids. Both of us were encouraged to attend church with our folks. As adults, we both drifted away from organized religion. A few months ago we decided to drop in to a Sunday service at Oakham Congregational Church. We’ve been going weekly since.
I felt a bit uncomfortable at first and thought we’d be looked at as “outsiders.” Just the opposite. It’s a lovely, small, welcoming church community.
The pastor, Tim Hanley, is a seasoned cleric. Down-to-earth, funny, regular guy. He likes to tell relevant stories to tie in real life experiences with the gospel lessons. The congregation gathers after service for an informal coffee hour where we can interact with others in the congregation.
They have a great organist who provides music and leads a small choir.
Next Sunday we’ll have a professional musician (who we’ve heard before) provide the music as Dawn, the regular organist, will be away. John is amazing.
If you’re thinking about “churching” again, I’d recommend giving it a go. You leave with a renewed feeling of small town community and belonging.
